2 Samuel 3 – The God Who Brings Down Pride and Lifts the Humble

Prayer

Lord God,
You are the God who sees behind power.
Abner was strong,
influential,
a commander of armies
yet pride ruled his heart.
When confronted,
he shifted loyalties not from repentance,
but from wounded ego.
Lord, search me.
Remove ambition that serves self
instead of You.

You are the God who establishes Your will
even through the schemes of men.
Abner thought he was delivering a kingdom,
but You were the One moving history forward.
Your purposes are not fragile.
You do not depend on perfect motives.
Yet You still judge the heart.

Guard me from using spiritual language
to cloak selfish desires.
Let my service be clean before You.

You are the God who sees hidden revenge.
Joab took justice into his own hands,
killing Abner in secret rage.
David mourned and declared his innocence.
Lord, keep my hands free
from private retaliation,
from settling scores
You never asked me to fight.

You are the God who honors restraint.
David refused to grasp,
refused to avenge,
refused to force outcomes.
Strength under control
this is the mark of a king after Your heart.
Form that strength in me.
Power surrendered is safer than power seized.

You are the God who turns hearts.
“All the people took notice, and it pleased them.”
Righteousness seen in the light
softens even suspicious eyes.
Help my integrity be visible,
not for praise,
but so Your name is honored.

Lord, tear down pride in me
before it destroys what You are building.
Let humility be my covering
and obedience my ambition.

You raise up and You bring low.
Let me walk low before You
all my days.

Amen.
