1 Samuel 18 – The God Who Tests Hearts Through Success

Prayer

Lord God,
You are the God who tests hearts
not only through suffering,
but through success.
David returned from victory,
celebrated, praised, and honored.
Songs were sung.
Crowds rejoiced.
And jealousy took root
in Saul’s heart.

You are the God who reveals
what praise exposes.
Saul heard the songs
and measured himself against David.
Fear replaced faith.
Insecurity bred hostility.
The crown became something to protect,
not steward.

Lord, I confess how easily success
awakens comparison in me.
How quickly I resent
what You give others.
Forgive me for allowing jealousy
to grow where gratitude should live.
Guard my heart from bitterness
that poisons obedience.

You are the God who preserves the faithful
even when attacked unjustly.
Saul hurled spears.
David fled.
Yet You were with him.
Favor followed obedience,
even into danger.
You showed that no weapon formed
against Your servant would prosper.

Teach me to trust You, Lord,
when obedience brings opposition.
Let me respond with humility,
not retaliation.
Keep my heart clean
even when others act from fear.

You are the God who tests hearts through success.
Refine mine,
that praise never corrupts
what You have entrusted to me.

Amen.
