O Covenant Keeping God,
You spoke to Abram in the silence of the night
not with thunder, but with a promise
“Do not be afraid.”

How often those words find me
when the waiting wears thin,
when the future feels uncertain,
when the promise seems far away.

You told him, “I am your shield.”
Not just the One who gives the reward
but the reward Himself.
You are the treasure.
You are the portion.
You are enough.

But Abram was honest
like I often am in the shadows.
He said, “What will You give me, Lord?”
He wasn’t ungrateful just weary.
He had walked in faith,
but still had no child.
No heir.
No sign of fulfillment.

Lord, I confess
I know what it’s like to believe You
and still question You.
To trust Your goodness
and still ask, “When?”

You didn’t rebuke him.
You led him outside.
You said, “Look up count the stars, if you can.”
And then You said, “So shall your offspring be.”

Father, help me to look up when I want to give up.
To see beyond what my eyes can measure.
To believe that the invisible seeds of today’s obedience
will one day shine like stars in the sky.

Abram believed You
and You counted it to him as righteousness.

Faith.
Not works.
Not lineage.
Not performance.
Just trust in the One who cannot lie.

But You didn’t stop with words
You made a covenant.
You told him to bring the animals.
To cut them.
To prepare for a ritual of binding.

And then
You put him to sleep.
You caused a deep dread to fall on him.
You told him the truth
that the road would be long,
his descendants would suffer,
but You would not forget.

And while he slept,
You passed through the sacrifice alone.

A smoking fire pot.
A blazing torch.
You alone walked between the pieces.
You bore the weight.
You took the vow.
You made the promise unbreakable.

God, how humbling
when I try to hold up my end,
You already carried it for me.
You made the covenant with Yourself
so that nothing I do could undo it.

This is grace.
This is gospel.
This is You.

So I rest in Your promise tonight.
Even when I’m tired.
Even when the fulfillment hasn’t come.
Even when the stars feel far away.

You are my shield.
You are my reward.
You walk the fire alone
so I can walk with You in peace.

In the name of Jesus,
the One who fulfilled the covenant in His own blood
Amen.
