Lord God,
You are the God of return.
When Your people stray,
You do not close the door behind them
You leave the light on,
calling them home with mercy stronger than judgment.
You spoke through Moses,
“When you return to the Lord your God and obey His voice,
then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you.”
You are the God who gathers the scattered,
who heals what exile has broken,
who brings life where rebellion left ruin.
You are faithful, Lord,
even when we are not.
You wait at the end of every wilderness,
not with wrath, but with welcome.
Your justice never forgets mercy,
and Your mercy never ignores truth.
You are both Judge and Redeemer
holy enough to confront sin,
gracious enough to forgive it.
I confess, Lord,
that my heart has wandered.
I have trusted my own wisdom,
followed my own desires,
and then wondered why the land of my soul feels barren.
Forgive me for seeking life apart from You.
Forgive me for listening to the world’s promises
while neglecting Your Word.
But thank You O thank You
that the way back is not blocked by shame,
but built by grace.
You say, “The Word is very near you;
it is in your mouth and in your heart,
so that you can do it.”
O Lord, let that Word awaken me again.
You promised not only to forgive,
but to circumcise the heart
to cut away the hardness that keeps us distant from You.
So do Your holy surgery within me, God.
Remove the layers of pride,
the calluses of sin,
the numbness of neglect.
Give me a tender heart that loves You fully
not out of fear,
but out of joy.
Let obedience become delight,
and repentance become restoration.
You said You would gather Your people
from the farthest parts of heaven,
that none who belong to You would be lost.
How great is Your mercy, Lord!
You pursue until You recover,
You discipline until You deliver.
You are not content to leave even one behind.
So gather me too, Lord
from distraction,
from doubt,
from despair.
Bring me home again to the nearness of Your love.
You set before Israel life and good,
death and evil.
You said, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse;
therefore choose life.”
And yet You knew
we cannot choose rightly without Your help.
So thank You, Lord,
that in Christ, You have chosen for us.
He is the Life You set before us,
the Obedience we could not offer,
the Blessing we could never earn.
Through Him, my choice is secure:
I choose life,
for I choose Christ.
You are the God who restores and circumcises the heart.
You do not simply bring us back to where we were
You make us new.
You plant repentance and reap joy,
You transform punishment into purpose,
You turn hearts of stone into hearts that beat again with grace.
So restore me, Lord
to the joy of Your salvation,
to the peace of Your promises,
to the love of Your covenant.
Let my obedience flow from affection,
my faith from gratitude,
and my life from resurrection power.
And when my days grow long and my heart grows faint,
let me remember
the Word is still near,
the promise still true,
and the Lord still restores those who return.
In the name of Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
the Life set before us,
and the Circumciser of hearts,
Amen.
