1 Samuel 31 – The God Who Remains Sovereign Through Tragedy

Prayer

Lord God,
You are the God who remains sovereign
even when stories end in sorrow.
Saul fell on Mount Gilboa
a king undone
not by lack of anointing,
but by persistent disobedience.
The book closes not with triumph,
but with grief.

You are the God who shows us
that beginnings matter,
but endings reveal the heart.
Saul’s life warns me
that giftedness cannot replace obedience,
and position cannot preserve a hardened soul.

Lord, keep me faithful to the end.
Guard me from drifting slowly,
from compromising quietly,
from assuming yesterday’s calling
guarantees tomorrow’s faithfulness.

Even in tragedy,
You were still advancing Your purposes.
A throne was being cleared.
A shepherd was being prepared.
Your promises were not buried
with Saul’s defeat.

Teach me to trust Your sovereignty
when stories end painfully.
Help me believe
that You are still writing
even when chapters close in grief.

You are the God
who remains King
over every ending
and every beginning.

Amen.
