1 Samuel 24 – The God Who Honors Mercy Over Vengeance

Prayer

Lord God,
You are the God who restrains the hand
when vengeance feels justified.
David stood over Saul
enemy exposed,
power within reach,
justice seemingly available.
And yet, he refused to strike.

You are the God who honors mercy
when retaliation feels right.
David trusted You
more than opportunity.
He refused to seize the throne
through bloodshed,
choosing instead to wait
for Your timing.

Lord, forgive me
for grasping at control
when You call me to trust.
I am quick to justify harsh words,
swift responses,
and self-protective actions.
Teach me that restraint
is not weakness,
and mercy is not surrender.

Shape my heart
to fear dishonoring You
more than missing my chance.
Help me to leave justice in Your hands
without growing bitter
while I wait.
Let mercy be my strength
when power is within reach.

You are the God who vindicates
without corruption,
who lifts without violence,
and who rules without fear.
I trust You to defend what is Yours
including me.

Amen.
