Judges 6 – The God Who Calls the Fearful Brave
Prayer
Lord God,
You are the Caller of the timid,
the Strength of the uncertain,
the Voice that finds us hiding and calls us by name.
When Your angel appeared to Gideon,
he was threshing wheat in secret,
beating out grain where fear had driven him to hide.
Yet You looked upon him not as he was,
but as You would make him
and said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”
You are the God who calls the fearful brave.
You do not wait for courage before You speak;
Your Word itself creates it.
You find us in our weakness,
wrap us in Your promise,
and transform trembling hearts into vessels of valor.
When Gideon protested,
when he questioned his worth,
You did not rebuke him
You reassured him “I will be with you.”
So remind me, Lord,
that my identity is not shaped by my fear,
but by Your presence.
I confess, Lord,
that I have often hidden like Gideon
behind excuses,
behind doubt,
behind the illusion of safety.
I have measured Your calling by my ability,
and shrunk back when faith required risk.
Forgive me for fearing failure more than disobedience.
Forgive me for calling caution what is really unbelief.
You have not given me a spirit of fear,
but of power, love, and sound mind.
So, speak again, Lord.
Call me from the shadows.
Let Your Word define me more than my weakness.
You are the God who confirms Your call with grace.
You answered Gideon’s trembling with patience
fire upon the altar,
dew upon the fleece,
peace within his heart.
You stooped to reassure the man You had chosen,
because Your compassion runs deeper than our doubt.
Even when we test You,
You prove Yourself faithful.
Even when we waver,
You whisper, “Peace be with you; do not fear.”
You are the God who tears down idols before raising warriors.
Before Gideon could fight Midian,
he had to fight the sin within his own house.
He broke his father’s altar to Baal,
cut down the Asherah pole,
and built a new altar to the Lord.
So, too, must I, O Lord.
Before I battle the world’s evil,
I must confront the idols that live in my heart
comfort, pride, approval, self reliance.
Tear them down, Lord.
Let the only altar in my life be the one that bears Your name.
You are the God who calls the fearful brave
not because they never tremble,
but because they trust You more than their fear.
So strengthen my heart for the fight ahead.
Let my courage be rooted in Your presence,
and my peace anchored in Your promise.
When I doubt, remind me of Gideon’s story
that You can turn the weakest in Manasseh
into a deliverer of nations.
For You, O Lord,
are the Mighty One who makes the trembling stand tall,
the Holy One who turns cowards into conquerors.
Speak over me what You spoke over Gideon:
“The Lord is with you.”
And I will rise,
not because I am fearless,
but because You are faithful.
In the name of Jesus,
the Captain of my salvation and the Prince of Peace,
Amen.
