Judges 10 – The God Who Waits for Repentance

Prayer
Lord God,
You are the Patient Redeemer,
the long suffering Savior whose mercy endures through generations.
You raised up Tola and Jair to deliver Israel,
to grant them peace after years of bloodshed,
and yet, when comfort returned,
so did their rebellion.
Again, Your people turned to idols,
bowing before gods who could not save.
You are the God who waits for repentance
grieved but not gone,
angry yet merciful,
wounded yet still willing to forgive.

You are the God whose heart is tender even in judgment.
You watched as Israel’s enemies pressed them down,
as the cries of Your covenant people
rose again from the ruins they created.
And when they finally confessed
when they said, “We have sinned against You”
You did not answer with ease,
but with truth
“Go, cry out to the gods you have chosen.”
It was a holy silence,
a love that refused to enable their rebellion.
For You know that cheap repentance bears no fruit.
You wait for the heart to break,
not merely the lips to speak.

I confess, Lord,
that I have often repeated Israel’s pattern.
I cry to You when pain presses in,
but forget You when peace returns.
I ask for mercy while holding on to idols.
Forgive me, O God,
for shallow sorrow and half-hearted repentance.
Forgive me for expecting restoration
without surrender.
Teach me to hate my sin as You do
not because of its consequences,
but because it wounds Your heart.

You are the God who cannot ignore the cries of the broken.
When Israel cast away their false gods
and turned their faces back to You,
Your Word says something beautiful and rare:
“You could bear their misery no longer.”
O Lord, how tender is Your justice,
how fierce is Your compassion!
Your holiness demands repentance,
yet Your heart runs to the penitent.
You are both Judge and Father
righteous in wrath,
rich in mercy.

You are the God who waits for repentance,
not because You are slow,
but because You are kind.
You desire not our punishment,
but our return.
You are patient with Your people,
longing for hearts that truly turn.
So, Lord, let mine be one of them.
Let my repentance be more than regret;
let it be renewal.
Strip away the idols of comfort and control.
Teach me to live daily in humble confession,
not out of guilt,
but out of gratitude for grace.

You are the God who always leaves the door open.
Even when Your people have wandered far,
the way home still bears the sign of mercy.
So I return again today,
not to bargain,
not to boast,
but to bow.
Receive me, Lord,
for the sake of Your covenant love.

For You are the God who waits for repentance,
the Savior who weeps for the wayward,
the Father who runs to the returning.
May my heart never make You wait in vain.

In the name of Jesus,
the Friend of sinners and the Redeemer of the repentant,
Amen.
